a little impetus, as a treat

A conversation often revisited amongst my friend group revolves around us loafing and lamenting about why happy gay movies simply do not exist. Further, when was the last time you saw a movie about lesbians A. that wasn’t sad, B. they weren’t white, and C. they had electricity. Ok, maybe that last one was a stretch, but really, I feel like the last few major motion pictures I can remember with theatrical releases about lesbian relationships had everyone in petticoats. Just give the lesbians electricity! Anyways, I digress. The point is, me, my friends, and the queer community I’ve fostered both in real life and online never see ourselves represented on screen. We are beautiful and diverse and incredible and powerful and since no one in Hollywood wants to recognize that, guess I just have to do it my damn self.

So here we are.

This show will work to bring life and authenticity to characters the likes of which many have never encountered, let alone on a television show. I want to create a world where Black, Brown and queer joy is commonplace. The majority of my characters are queer people of color, many of whom exist outside of the gender binary. I want the concept of respecting peoples pronouns and boundaries and varying and complex ways of life to seem easy––effortless. Because if you’re not an asshole, it really is. A major arc of the show revolves around the main character delving into professional sex work for the first time. This aspect is really important to me as it is a topic that is close to my heart and I am very passionate about the normalization of sex work as work. Until that happens, sex workers, along with trans lives, particularly Black trans women, and other members of the queer community will remain the least protected peoples in our society.

The show finds its roots in queer theory, particularly disidentification and queer worldbuilding, with the ultimate goal of creating something that serves as a catalyst for permanent structural change and harm reduction.

I’m not good at many things. I always felt I was incapable of making the huge systemic and societal changes I felt we needed in this world. But I do like to think that I can write. And I know first-hand the importance of seeing yourself represented in media, and the power of imagined realities.  So, I guess this is me doing the one thing I can to help.
